UN Says Colombia Peace Process Improves as Rural Violence Continues

(MENAFN) The United Nations said Tuesday that Colombia has become generally more peaceful since the landmark peace accord, while warning that illegal armed groups continue to destabilize parts of the countryside nearly a decade after the agreement.

UN Special Representative for Colombia Miroslav Jenča told the United Nations Security Council that the country’s peace process has produced measurable progress, particularly in political participation and electoral stability.

He said that “the holding of largely peaceful and more inclusive elections has been a feature of Colombia's positive evolution under the Peace Agreement,” adding that it is important for the country to maintain this path.

Jenča highlighted the disarmament of what he described as Latin America’s largest and oldest guerrilla movement as a major milestone, noting that more than 11,000 former combatants continue to take part in reintegration programs nearly a decade after the deal.

At the same time, he warned that progress remains uneven and fragile, especially in rural regions where former fighters have resettled and where economic and security conditions remain weak.

He said the situation varies significantly across the country and remains highly complex, with some areas still affected by ongoing conflict dynamics.

While acknowledging that “Colombia remains today more peaceful than during peak years of the conflict,” he stressed that several rural zones continue to face serious pressure from illegal armed groups, which still undermine stability in those regions.
