Turkey Says Iran’s Bombing of Gulf States Is “Incredibly Wrong Strategy”
In an interview with a state broadcaster, Fidan discussed the tense regional situation following US and Israeli military strikes on Iran on February 28, describing the current days as “extremely critical.”
He noted that the region has endured major conflicts over the past two decades, adding that the latest escalation is not confined to Iran alone. “When we look at the effects of the war, as we had predicted earlier, it is spreading across the entire region,” he said.
President Donald Trump announced on Saturday the launch of Operation Epic Fury, reportedly killing Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei along with top military officials. Tehran responded with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel and Gulf countries hosting US assets.
Fidan explained that when Tehran perceives an existential threat, it adopts an approach of “if I go down, I will take the region with me,” often aiming at other nations’ energy infrastructure.
“Iran knows very well how vital the energy infrastructure in key regional countries is for the global economy, stability and energy security, and it carries out its attacks accordingly,” he added.
He also highlighted that Iran uses such measures to exert pressure under attack and said that the duration of the conflict remains uncertain and subject to different assessments.
