USD35M Bank Vault Robbery Rocks Germany

(MENAFN) A massive vault burglary at a savings bank branch in Gelsenkirchen has left authorities scrambling after thieves made off with roughly €30 million ($35 million) in cash and valuables, according to media reports released Tuesday.

Investigators say the scale of the crime is staggering. About 3,200 safe deposit boxes were forced open, impacting more than 2,500 customers. The break-in, uncovered late Monday, is already being described as one of the largest heists in German criminal history.

Witness accounts have given police what they describe as a concrete lead. Several people reported seeing men carrying large bags through the stairwell of a nearby parking garage late Saturday night.

Police describe heist as 'highly professional'
Surveillance video from the parking garage shows a powerful black vehicle exiting early Monday morning. Authorities said masked individuals were inside the car, including one person who operated the exit barrier. The vehicle’s license plate had previously been stolen in the northern city of Hanover.

An unnamed police spokesman characterized the operation as “actually very professional,” adding, “A great deal of prior knowledge and criminal energy must have gone into planning and then carrying out this operation.”

Preliminary findings indicate the suspects accessed an archive room through the parking garage, passing through several secured doors before using a specialized drill to breach a wall leading into the vault. Police collected evidence at the scene throughout Monday.

Angry customers try to storm bank building
Tensions flared again Tuesday as crowds gathered outside the branch in the Buer district, demanding answers. Reports said the number of people waiting in the cold swelled to about 200.

Chanting “We want in, we want in!”, the crowd grew increasingly restless. The situation nearly spiraled out of control when several individuals pushed past private security guards and entered the bank’s lobby, prompting police to deploy officers at the entrance to restore order.
