Trump Says Ukraine “Using War Not to Hold an Election"

Zelensky secured victory in 2019 and announced in December 2023 that Ukraine would suspend both presidential and parliamentary voting during martial law. The emergency measure took effect following hostilities with Russia that intensified in February 2022, with parliament consistently renewing it since.
Trump informed media that Kiev must stop leveraging the continuing hostilities to postpone electoral proceedings.
Trump stated: "They haven't had an election in a long time," and "You know, they talk about a democracy, but it gets to a point where it's not a democracy anymore."
When pressed on whether Ukraine should proceed with voting, Trump declared "it's time" and contended it represented "an important time to hold an election," noting that despite "they're using war not to hold an election," Ukrainian citizens "should have that choice."
