Trump Criticizes Netanyahu Over Hamas Ceasefire Response
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has sharply criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in response to how he reacted to a recent announcement by Hamas regarding a Gaza peace initiative, according to a report from a news outlet, which cited unnamed sources.
Hamas confirmed on Friday that it had accepted a US-mediated offer to release its hostages.
While the group did not initially declare an intent to lay down arms, sources within the organization later told a news agency on Sunday that it was preparing to do so.
According to reports, Trump called Netanyahu on Friday to discuss what he perceived as positive developments from Hamas. However, the Israeli Prime Minister took a more skeptical view, reportedly telling the US leader, “this is nothing to celebrate, and that it doesn’t mean anything,” a US official revealed to the news outlet.
In response, Trump is said to have snapped back, “I don’t know why you’re always so f***ing negative. This is a win. Take it,” expressing frustration with Netanyahu’s pessimism.
The following day, aides to Netanyahu emphasized that the Prime Minister and the US President remained “totally aligned.” Still, the US official who spoke with the news outlet described the phone conversation as “contentious,” adding that Trump was visibly “annoyed.”
President Trump has also urged Israel to cease its aerial attacks on Gaza.
He proposed that Hamas release all remaining hostages within 72 hours, provided that Israel halts its military actions and pulls back its forces “to the agreed-upon line.”
Although the Israeli government has accepted the proposed prisoner exchange, it has yet to formally respond to Trump’s suggestion that it suspend its ongoing operations in Gaza.
