Gunman starts shooting people from his apartment in Australia

(MENAFN) On Sunday, a gunman opened fire from his apartment onto a bustling shopping street in Sydney, injuring 17 people, according to reports.

Acting Superintendent Stephen Parry explained that the suspect discharged between 50 and 100 rounds from a high-caliber rifle, hitting both pedestrians and passing vehicles.

Approximately two hours later, authorities entered the apartment building, arrested the 60-year-old individual, and secured his firearm. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, Parry said.

A man in his 50s was taken to hospital with gunshot injuries to his neck and chest, while 16 others received treatment on site for wounds caused by flying glass.

“It’s unprecedented for Sydney to experience something like this, with such a large number of shots fired,” New South Wales Acting Assistant Commissioner Trent King told reports on Monday.

“We’re very fortunate that we didn’t have more damage, more injuries, or indeed fatalities,” he added.
