Trump Prolongs TikTok’s U.S. Lifeline for Third Time

(MENAFN) On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order that postpones the TikTok ban in the United States by another 90 days, granting his administration additional time to negotiate a deal under the "sell-or-ban" legislation. This move allows TikTok to continue serving its 170 million American users uninterrupted.

This marks the third extension of the TikTok ban deadline by Trump. With Thursday’s order, the deadline now moves to September 17, 2025. Previously, Trump extended the deadline twice—by 75 days each time—on January 20 and April 4, 2025.

Since entering the 2024 presidential race, Trump has gained over 15 million followers on TikTok, an app owned by China’s ByteDance Ltd. and widely popular among U.S. youth. He has expressed affection for the platform, stating in January that he has a “warm spot for TikTok.”

Despite the ongoing extensions, the likelihood of TikTok facing an imminent ban in the U.S. is diminishing. Local media note that although these executive orders have attracted scrutiny, they have yet to face legal challenges in court.

During his first term, Trump issued an executive order aimed at banning TikTok unless ByteDance divested its U.S. operations to an American company, but the order never took effect due to legal disputes.

In April 2024, then-President Joe Biden enacted legislation requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok within 270 days over national security concerns. The law mandates that app store operators like Apple and Google must remove TikTok starting January 19, 2025, if the sale does not occur.

According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, public opinion on a TikTok ban has softened, with roughly one-third of Americans supporting a ban—down from 50 percent in March 2023—while about a third oppose it, and another third remain uncertain.

TikTok, initially launched as Douyin in China in September 2016, introduced its international version later that year. It gained widespread U.S. popularity following its 2018 merger with the lip-sync app Musical.ly.
