Nelson & Isa Lácteos: The Long Island Family Bringing Central America to New York Tables
BAY SHORE, NY, UNITED STATES, August 14, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Bay Shore Based Dairy Company Has Spent Eight Years Supplying Authentic Central American Products to Households, Bodegas, Delis, Restaurants, and Grocers Across the Region
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Hispanic owned firms accounted for 8.4 percent of all employer businesses in the United States in 2023, roughly 496,000 companies generating $730.3 billion in receipts. Very few of them ever make the news, and almost all of them hold their neighborhoods together.
Nelson & Isa Lácteos LLC is one of those companies. Based in Bay Shore on Long Island, the family-owned dairy business has spent eight years bringing authentic Central American products to households and small businesses across the region. Nelson Hernández and his wife, Isabel Ramos, founded it. Their family still runs it. It now serves roughly 250 -300 accounts in 125-135 communities.
The recipes are older than the business by a long stretch. Hernández grew up in the countryside of El Salvador among cows, pigs, and chickens, and he learned to milk cows when he was nine. Not long after, his grandmother stood him at her stove and taught him to make fresh artisan cheese by hand. She was handing down something her family had been making for generations. He thought he was helping his grandmother.
Years later, on a visit to his sister in Maryland, she brought him to a local dairy farm. Standing among cows and fresh milk again brought all of it back, and it gave him an idea. There were families all over New York who had left those flavors behind, and he was certain he could bring them back.
He started the way people start when nobody is handing them anything. He drove to local businesses one at a time and asked for a chance. Owners who knew him and trusted his word gave him one. One customer became two, then ten, and eventually hundreds.
The company carries two names because two people built it. Hernández will tell anyone who asks that there would be no business without Isabel. They run it side by side, surrounded by family that includes his two children as well as the daughter and grandchildren he gained through Isabel, who have called him father and grandfather from the beginning.
"When a family opens one of our products, I want them to taste the country they came from," said Nelson Hernández, founder of Nelson & Isa Lácteos LLC. "That is my grandmother's work sitting on their kitchen table. It is why I still check every detail myself."
Neighbors know the family for more than what shows up on an invoice. The company supplies small independently owned shops in neighborhoods the large distributors tend to drive past, sends products to church events and community gatherings, and helps local families when help is needed. Hernández would prefer none of that be mentioned at all.
He is far more comfortable talking about what he tells people who are just getting started.
"Work hard, keep learning, and never stop believing in what you are building," Hernández said. "The sacrifices you make today become the blessings your children receive tomorrow."
