【Expand international markets in Spain and Portugal】MGTO invites Spanish travel trade to Macao for familiarization visit and development of in-depth tour products

MACAU, August 12 - Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has unfolded a series of promotional initiatives targeting the Spanish and Portuguese visitor markets, including arranging for influential tourism operators to Macao for familiarization visits, multichannel promotions and collaborative development of tourism products. Among them, the promotional video in Portugal won the Silver Award of the US International Awards 2026 in the subcategory of city promotion. Various initiatives are conducted to keep raising Macao’s profile and glamour as a travel destination in Spain and Portugal, as part of the international marketing endeavors.

Delegates of a leading Spanish tourism operator explores communities in Macao

MGTO and the large Spanish online travel agency DESTINIA jointly arranged for a travel trade delegation to pay a familiarization visit to Macao from 22 to 25 July. The four-day itinerary covered a visit to the World Heritage – The Historic Centre of Macao and the latest cultural tourism facilities, as well as tasting of local signature delicacies, offering the Spanish trade delegates an opportunity to experience Macao’s vibrant scene of “tourism +”. The delegates also engaged in exchange and networking with members of Macao’s travel trade who participated in FITUR 2026 and will take part in this international tourism trade fair in Spain next year, to strengthen connections and explore business opportunities together.

Profound journey in Macao with visits to other destinations

The collaborative initiative facilitates development of profound tour products to Spanish residents’ preferences. The tourism operator from Spain is encouraged to develop multi-destination products which center around a profound journey in Macao and incorporate visits to Beijing, Shanghai or Hong Kong in one trip, designed to extend visitors’ length of stay and stimulate tourism spending in Macao.

MGTO is planning to invite the most leading travel trade organization in Spain – the Spanish Confederation of Travel Agents (CEAV), to lead a delegation of about 20 travel agents and journalists to Macao in October for a familiarization visit to tourist attractions, leisure and entertainment facilities, besides enjoying the Macao International Fireworks Display Contest and meeting with the local travel trade for networking. The visit is expected to inspire Spanish tourism operators’ development of profound tour products in the future.

Extend the promotional impact from Experience Macao Roadshow in Madrid in April

MGTO rolled out the “Experience Macao Roadshow in Madrid” in April this year to showcase the destination’s latest developments in tourism, culture, commerce and trade, sports and other realms. Five lucky-draw winners at the roadshow are granted the chance to visit Macao between July and December. Some of them travel along with their family and friends as well to experience the World Heritage – The Historic Centre of Macao and Macao’s vibrant scene as a Creative City of Gastronomy, set to widen and extend the promotional impact.

Diverse promotional campaign goes on

MGTO will unleash a new round of promotional initiatives in Spain as follows: release of a promotional video on renowned international platforms in parallel with multichannel promotions on the press and social media; invitation for travel content creators from Spain to experience Macao and create relevant posts. Furthermore, the Office will participate in FITUR 2027 and brand Macao further as an attractive long-haul destination for Spanish travelers.

Promotional video in Portugal garners prestigious award

For the Portuguese visitor market, MGTO partnered with Abreu, a famous travel platform in Portugal, to launch a promotional initiative themed as “Experience Macao” from August 2025 to February 2026. Various tourism products were launched for sales and reservations during the period, ranging from “Hong Kong-Macao”, “Korea ‧ Hong Kong-Macao”, “Japan ‧ Hong Kong-Macao” to “Chinese mainland ‧ Hong Kong-Macao” multi-destination travel products, among others. In parallel, Macao was spotlighted via promotions on various channels like television, radio and content creators. The promotional initiative garnered over 30 million impressions in total. Among them, the promotional video portrayed Macao’s unique cityscape as a cultural crossroads of the East and West and won the Silver Award of the US International Awards 2026 in the subcategory of city promotion. For over five decades, the US International Awards are a renowned contest recognizing the pinnacle of excellence in branded video productions worldwide.

Vigorous marketing endeavors in Europe

In the first half of 2026, total visitor arrivals from Spain, Portugal and Europe all registered double-digit growth compared with the corresponding period of last year. The Portuguese Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (APAVT) has commended Macao as its “Preferred Destination 2026”, a designation Macao embraces for the fourth time with the refreshed focus of the European travel trade. MGTO will forge ahead with its promotional campaigns in Spain and Portugal, spotlighting Macao in various travel fairs while arranging familiarization trips for tourism operators, partnering up for product development and multichannel promotions, as part of the efforts to attract more international visitors and deliver Macao’s role and strengths as a “precise connector” between China and both the Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking countries, in active pursuit of international markets.
